Federal authorities have temporarily paused entry to the whale shark park due to prior winds that caused plankton to sink from the surface waters. The whale sharks followed the plankton to feed below the surface where it is not legal to swim with them. There are plenty of whale sharks in the general area, and many are now back feeding at the surface.
Baja Charters chartered a plane and videoed the surface proving there are now whale sharks feeding at the surface again within the park. Regulators should have reopened, but federal staff have been slow to react. They keep indicating the park will be reopened soon. What that means is hard to determine. Probably within the next few days.
If the park is not open when you are scheduled to go out, and you cannot reschedule easily, then in accordance with our Booking & Terms we will provide you with two activities for the price of one as follows.
1 - We provide a Sea Lions and Remote Beaches activity the day you are scheduled, (www.BajaRemoteBeaches.com), AND
2 - We provide you with a FREE prepaid whale shark certificate to use when the park is open.
Baja Charters provides ground transportation at no additional charge. Guests are typically picked up in a comfortable, temperature controlled 18-seat Transit and greeted with cold bottled water. The ride to La Paz offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and paradisiacal beaches to the west, while to the east, mountains dotted with cacti are a reminder that Baja is indeed a desert. The ride is often an entertaining time for guests as they get to know one another before spending fun on the water together.
Arriving and boarding Baja Cat you meet the captain and crew, including the chef, and your marine biologist, or certified guide, which also serves as hostess. Guests are briefed on safety details by your guide. A delicious breakfast with coffee and cocktails is served.
The adventure begins within the bay of La Paz skirting the perimeter of the government-controlled park in search of whale sharks feeding outside the park area. Along the way, we frequently encounter dolphins, jumping mobula rays, and humpback whales, amongst other sea life.
We normally arrive first to Lover’s Cove, then visit El Merito cove, followed by the world-famous Balandra beaches and the sea lion colony of San Rafaelito. It’s a day designed to play and relax, and to allow guests to swim with sea lions, explore remote beaches and enjoy the clear water lapping against pristine white sands. Paddleboards and kayaks are on board and available, along with snorkel gear, and a separate snorkel boat.
Time spent snorkeling with the sea lions is usually fun and educational. In season, sea lion pups are notoriously playful, and love flirting with snorkelers.
